The Walk to the Volkspark

You do not need to know the route. On an HSV matchday, you can follow the colours.

Blue, white and black appear across Hamburg's stations. A scarf on the opposite platform. A shirt beneath an open jacket. Small groups gradually becoming one large movement towards the west of the city.

The Volksparkstadion is not waiting beside Hamburg's central landmarks. Reaching it requires a journey away from the harbour, shopping streets and crowded neighbourhoods.

That distance is part of the experience.

With every stop, the train becomes more recognisably HSV.

Supporters enter carrying drinks, flags and scarves. Conversations move between the approaching match, previous away trips and familiar complaints about the team. Children stand beside people who have made the same journey for decades.

For a visitor, this is the first sign that matchday has begun. There is no turnstile and no view of the pitch, but the ordinary transport network has already become part of the football ritual.

The crowd usually disperses at the stations surrounding the Volkspark. Different routes lead towards the same destination. Supporters who were compressed into trains now form long streams through the streets.

The final approach gives the Volksparkstadion a different character from grounds built directly into dense city neighbourhoods.

The route opens into wider paths, trees and gathering places. Food and drink stands interrupt the walk. Friends wait for one another. Supporters pause before continuing towards the stadium.

The crowd grows larger, but the ground can remain hidden for surprisingly long. You experience the matchday first through sound and movement: songs somewhere ahead, conversations on every side and the constant flow of blue, white and black.

Then the structure begins to appear through the trees.

The scale changes. A journey through Hamburg becomes an arrival at one of the city's largest gathering places.

Every supporter brings a different version of HSV along this route.

Some remember European trophies and the great teams of earlier decades. Others grew up with relegation battles, the day the Bundesliga clock lost its meaning and seven seasons in the second division.

Their memories are different, but the journey brings them together. The same paths are walked after victories and during difficult seasons. Players, coaches and league positions change. The movement towards the Volkspark continues.

This repetition gives the walk its importance. It is not a spectacular event created for one afternoon. It is a ritual built from thousands of ordinary matchdays.

Close to the ground, the movement becomes slower. The entrances, ramps and outer walls take over the view. Supporters separate towards their sections while songs echo from different parts of the stadium.

Outside, the Volksparkstadion feels large. Inside, it becomes enclosed and immediate. The stairs rise, the concourse narrows and then the pitch appears.

Thousands of separate journeys have reached the same place.

Soon the scarves will rise. “Mein Hamburg lieb ich sehr” will play. The teams will enter and attention will turn towards the pitch.

But the experience did not begin with the opening whistle.

It began at the station, inside the train and along the paths where the colours became more frequent with every step.

A direct journey might save a few minutes. It would also miss part of what makes an HSV matchday memorable.

Leave enough time. Join the supporters travelling west. Walk the final stretch instead of treating it only as a distance that needs to be completed.

Watch the crowd gather. Listen as the sound changes. Notice the moment the stadium first appears.

The Volksparkstadion is the destination. The journey towards it is part of the story.
