Going Our Own Way

RB Leipzig is a young club in a city with one of Germany's oldest football histories.

The German Football Association was founded in Leipzig in 1900. Three years later, VfB Leipzig became the country's first national champion.

During the East German era, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig won domestic cups and reached the 1987 European Cup Winners' Cup final against Ajax.

Reunification brought new economic and sporting realities. Leipzig briefly returned to the Bundesliga through VfB in 1993/94, but the club fell through the divisions and later became insolvent.

The city retained its football history. What it no longer had was a stable club near the top of the German game.

RB Leipzig was founded in 2009 after Red Bull acquired the playing rights of SSV Markranstädt's senior team.

The new club began in the fifth-tier Oberliga with an objective that was never hidden: reaching the Bundesliga as quickly as possible.

Money, professional structures and long-term planning gave Leipzig possibilities unavailable to ordinary clubs at the same level.

But resources still had to become results. Promotion required teams, coaches and players capable of moving through competitions with very different demands.

Four promotions followed in seven seasons.

In 2016, RB Leipzig reached the Bundesliga.

Leipzig's identity was not built only through rapid promotion. It was also expressed through a particular kind of football.

Young players, aggressive pressing and fast transitions became recurring features. The squad was designed to develop together rather than depend entirely on established stars approaching the end of their careers.

Ralf Rangnick played a central role in shaping this approach. The structure connected recruitment, coaching and a clear idea of how the team should play.

Talented footballers could use Leipzig as a place to enter the Bundesliga, compete in Europe and progress rapidly.

Many eventually moved elsewhere. The club's challenge was to make the system survive the departure of individual players.

RB Leipzig's first Bundesliga season immediately changed the scale of its ambition.

The newly promoted team won its first home match against Borussia Dortmund and remained unbeaten through its opening thirteen league games.

Leipzig finished the 2016/17 season in second place and qualified directly for the Champions League.

There was no prolonged period of adapting quietly to the top division. Within months, the newcomer was competing near the top of the table.

In 2020, Leipzig reached the Champions League semi-final after eliminating Tottenham Hotspur and Atlético Madrid.

A club that had not existed eleven years earlier was one victory away from Europe's largest club match.

Fast development created strong league finishes and European qualification, but a new question followed: could Leipzig turn progress into trophies?

The club lost the 2019 DFB-Pokal final against Bayern München and the 2021 final against Borussia Dortmund.

In 2022, Leipzig returned to Berlin. The final against SC Freiburg remained level after extra time, and RB won the penalty shoot-out.

The first major trophy had arrived.

One year later, Leipzig defeated Eintracht Frankfurt to retain the DFB-Pokal. Consecutive cup victories gave the club something that league positions alone could not provide: shared moments attached to silverware.

Older clubs explain themselves through stories passed between generations. RB Leipzig is still producing its first generation of those memories.

Children who first attended matches during the lower-league years are now adults. Supporters who watched the Bundesliga promotion have experienced Champions League nights and cup victories inside the same decade.

The club's youth creates freedom. Leipzig does not need to copy every tradition followed elsewhere.

It also creates uncertainty. Without a long history to provide meaning automatically, every choice contributes to the kind of club RB Leipzig will become.

The structures may have been created quickly. Culture cannot be accelerated in quite the same way.

The route was planned. The identity is still being written.
